Battery backup for a refrigerator: start with energy, then check the motor

Start with how long the outage could last

Choose a planning window, such as eight hours, and list the appliances you want to keep on. Add your router and lights if you want them on the same battery. The calculator estimates their combined energy use.

A refrigerator does not use a constant amount of power. Its compressor switches on and off, and defrost cycles can add load. A short outage can look very different from the daily average.

Use the energy label when you can

You do not need watts to start. Our refrigerator profile uses a broad manufacturer-published range of 1–4 kWh per day. It is a category estimate, not a measurement of your refrigerator.

For a more specific long-term average, enter annual kWh from your appliance label in the calculator. For example, 438 kWh/year works out to 50 W on average: 438 × 1,000 ÷ 8,760. That conversion does not tell you running or starting power.

Check the requirements that capacity cannot answer

Before buying, verify the station’s continuous AC output, its ability to start your compressor, the supported surge duration, voltage and outlets. A battery may store enough energy and still fail to start the appliance.

A representative plug-meter measurement can improve the energy estimate. Use the manufacturer’s documentation for startup and compatibility. Do not rely on a generic multiplier as proof that a particular refrigerator will start.
