The basement estimate follows the ENERGY STAR portable-dehumidifier sizing chart. A measured humidity value replaces the symptom estimate. At exactly 2,000 sq ft we use the larger-space band. The chart is not a crawl-space or whole-home engineering calculation.

Before you choose

A few details can change the right answer.

Do I need a humidity meter to use this?

No. Start with the conditions that best describe the space. A hygrometer can improve the input; a musty smell alone does not measure humidity or identify the source of a moisture problem.

Why does a “55-pint” model show 32 pints here?

Those numbers come from different test conditions. The manufacturer’s HD55P sample plate lists 55 at 80°F / 60% RH and 32 at 65°F / 60% RH. We keep the references separate, and ask you to verify the current unit.

Is a pump always better?

A pump is useful when the discharge point is above the unit. A suitable downhill drain may work by gravity. Confirm the permitted vertical lift, hose length and routing in the exact model’s instructions.

Will this fix leaking walls or guarantee mold removal?

No. The tool helps plan moisture-control equipment. Leaks, standing water and the source of dampness need their own assessment and repair.
