Start with the room, not the biggest number on the box
Measure floor area and describe the dampness before running a dehumidifier. A humidity reading is useful, but you can begin with a clearly labeled estimate from the conditions you observe.
The calculator returns a capacity band from published portable-room guidance. It does not measure moisture entering through walls, floors or outdoor air.
Read the conditions behind the capacity
A pint-per-day rating describes removal in a test environment. Capacity measured in hot, very humid air cannot be substituted for performance under cooler conditions.
Our two reference models show separate cooler-condition and 80°F / 60% RH figures. Check the current unit’s documentation; a model name can outlive a specification revision.
Complete the physical checks
Confirm temperature, drainage, access, clearances and airflow before buying. A unit with enough rated capacity may still lack the bucket you need, or require a different drain arrangement.
If the space is a crawl space, or water is actively entering, address those conditions before treating a portable-room chart as an installation plan.
